A World of Ice and Gold
Inspired by “The Little Match Girl” by Hans Christian Andersen

In the heart of the city, where frost bites the air,
The towers of opulence glitter and glare.
Diamonds in windows, champagne in their glow,
While beneath their cold shadows, the desperate go.
Barefoot she wandered, the match girl alone,
Her cries drowned by laughter, her pain turned to stone.
Fingers trembling, she clutched at the flame,
Each spark a dream—each dream, just the same.
A stove that could warm her, a meal rich and sweet,
A tree bearing treasures that danced at her feet.
She saw in those moments a world full of care,
But it vanished like whispers—thin, empty air.
Oh, the ones in their mansions of gilded delight,
Blind to the sorrows that haunt the cold night.
Ears sealed to the wails of a world in despair,
They hoard all their treasures, but love is so rare.
The Earth groans in torment, her wounds deep and wide,
Forests and oceans consumed by their pride.
Yet the rich, in their brilliance, refuse to atone,
Their hands clutching riches while hearts turn to stone.
And the child in the corner, so silent, so still,
Is a mirror reflecting their unyielding will.
For the wealth that they cherish is a shackle, a chain,
Binding the world to its ruin and pain.
O daughters of ice, O sons born of greed,
The planet is crying; her children still bleed.
Will you not kindle the match of your soul,
And trade icy riches for love to make whole?
But the dawn does not answer; the frost does not fade,
And the child sleeps eternal, in the shadow they made.
Yet her flame lingers on, a truth to ignite,
In the heart of the darkness, one match strikes the light.
