I wish I were autumn

I envy this season of changes
And the way the falling leaves get to gently touch your face
Autumn has got a hold on you
One that makes me long to silently rot away

Does the wind know how lucky it is
To get to wander on your skin and memorize the places it has been
Oh, how I wish I knew that road
I’d tread it carefully, to make sure you never catch my cold

Because, darling, you’re not ready for that winter
And you may think the changing of the temperatures is bad
There’s no way I would expose you to the darkness in my head
Lord, you’re not even the only reason it’s gone mad

So, I will leave it to the rain
To cleanse you and wash your pain away
I will leave it to the warmth of your newly, unpacked coat
To try and keep you whole

For I am not merely wind, or cold, or rain
I would freeze you to death, given the chance
My attempts at love have always been in vain
